چکیده

The movement correlates of unit activity in medullary reticular formation cells were observed in unrestrained cats. Fifty-four percent of these cells had "laterally asymmetrical" movement relations and 38% had "laterally symmetrical" movement relations. All cells that discharged in relation to active lateral movement of the spinal column discharged preferentially in relation to ipsilateral movements, while all cells responding to passive lateral movement discharged preferentially in relation to contralateral movement. Cells related to movements of the vertebral column in the vertical plane and a small number of units related to facial, laryngeal, paw, and other movements were also found. The specific motor rela-; tions of reticular formation cells may explain the findings of previous lesion, stimulation, and recording studies.

Activity of medullary reticular formation neurons in the unrestrained cat during waking and sleep.

Single units, recorded in the medial medullary reticular formation (RF) in unrestrained, behaving cats, discharged in conjunction with specific movements and postures. Most cells were also active during REM sleep. Discharge rates in active waking and REM sleep were positively correlated and discharge patterns in these states were similar. We conclude that activity in these cells is related to t...

Contributions of the medullary raphe and ventromedial reticular region to pain modulation and other homeostatic functions.

The raphe magnus is part of an interrelated region of medullary raphe and ventromedial reticular nuclei that project to all areas of the spinal gray. Activation of raphe and reticular neurons evokes modulatory effects in sensory, autonomic, and motor spinal processes. Two physiological types of nonserotonergic cells are observed in the medullary raphe and are thought to modulate spinal pain pro...

Multimodal sensory responses of nucleus reticularis gigantocellularis and the responses' relation to cortical and motor activation.

The connectivity of large neurons of the nucleus reticularis gigantocellularis (NRGc) in the medullary reticular formation potentially allows both for the integration of stimuli, in several modalities, that would demand immediate action, and for coordinated activation of cortical and motoric activity. We have simultaneously recorded cortical local field potentials, neck muscle electromyograph (...

Evoked potentials in the reticular formation during auditory conditioning of the corneal reflex in the chronic decerebrate rat.

The chronic decerebrate rat preparation was used to study electrical activity in the reticular formation during development of the classically conditioned eyeblink reflex to a tone. With persistent training a conditioned blink reflex was established in 8 out of 11 rats. A control group of four rats received unpaired presentations of the conditioned and unconditioned stimuli and served as a cont...

Behavioral functions of the reticular formation.

Studies of the behavioral correlates of activity in reticular formation cells, usually performed in restrained animals, have found units whose discharge relates to sensory stimuli, pain and escape behavior, conditioning and habituation, arousal, complex motivational states, REM sleep, eye movements, respiration and locomotion. Units with these different behavioral correlates were found in the s...
